I consider 2007 a very interesting year for technology. Let’s look in detail at the main highlights of it, which I find most important.

First, in the area of entertainment, game consoles have apparently won over PC. Xbox360, PS3 and the Wii are extremely popular today. Everyone wants to buy one. Or two Even the Queen of the UK likes the Wii, that means modern consoles have managed to greatly expand their user base and interest much more people in games as a form of entertainment. Even I, having been a hard-core PC gamer a few years ago, now want to buy me Sony Playstation 3! Don’t ask me why I chose it instead of Xbox or Wii (it’s a question of taste), most important is the fact I chose a console instead of PC for games! Hey, there’s even Oblivion and Half-Life 2 (with Orange Box) for PS3! As well as many other popular exclusive and multiplatform titles. So who needs Windows PC to play games anymore?! Game consoles have truly won over PC this year!

Second highlight of 2007 is proliferation of HDTV-standard and clear signs of the end of HD format-war, with Blu-ray as a clear winner! (Poor Microsoft and Toshiba… but HD-DVD was inferior standard anyway) No more confusion, go for Blu-Ray! Oh, and don’t forget that PS3 doubles as a quite affordable Blu-Ray player! Now, that’s quite a tasty deal for me! Actually, I don’t even have a HDTV-set yet, but I’m gonna buy it this year for sure. Some big LCD flat panel. And a PS3. Yeah, guess it would be cool!

Third, the Apple iPhone. Like it or not, but it has revolutionized the wireless industry, and spurred competition. The only thing I don’t like about iPhone is that it’s locked to only one wireless provider in each country where it’s sold. Maybe for America that’s OK, but here in Europe we have freedom to use any phone we like with any wireless provider’s SIM-card (that’s free market, you know)…

Oh, wait, there’s another highlight of 2007: Duke Nukem Forever trailer! Finally, there’s hope that Duke Nukem Forever will be released in 2008! And I hope it won’t disappoint the army of Duke fans out there, including myself

Well, one more thing: 2007 was the year I started blogging! Cheers!

Windows Vista has been around for more than a year already. And it has received unusually high amounts of criticism, even from loyal fans. It seems pretty much anyone who tried Vista has already complained in public. Except me . Believe me, I tried hard NOT to complain. I waited for more than a year. But now I have had enough of it. Let’s discuss it, and see for ourselves that there’s clearly no WOW Microsoft keeps talking about!

First off, Vista is very demanding. It has unusually high system requirements. But what do we get for this? New graphics subsystem with 3D window compositing? User Account Control? Instant search? Widgets? (oh no, they’re called Gadgets in Vista, that must be completely different thing! </sarcasm>) C’mon, equivalents were present in Mac OS X and Linux for ages, and they do work fine on a much lower-end PCs! I know for sure, I ran that 3D Compiz thing on Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop (SLED) 10 on a Pentium 3 PC (1GHz) with an ancient videocard ATI Radeon 7200 (32 Mb VRAM, no shaders)! And that thing worked quite fast in Linux, I was pleasantly surprised. Damn, I was blown away!

I remember first time I installed Vista (on a decent Core 2 Duo PC with 1 Gb RAM), it worked faster than XP. And at first I liked the beautiful Aero UI. Huh! Well, after a year of use Vista slowed down noticeably, and that glassy transparent window decorations had bugged me so bad that I turned transparency off. The whole new UI is so bright and flashy, I think it’s hard on the eyes. Similar to the first release of Aqua on Mac OS X 10.0, but Apple since then has toned down the interface considerably. Oh, and Microsoft never learns… Overall, I personally think that Aero GUI is the usability disaster! And don’t get me started on UAC, Flip 3D and other things. Others have said it all already, so spare me the details, please People hoped that at least SP1 will speed up things, but it seems it won’t significantly change anything, just add more bloat. Ah, and things like draconian DRM are really annoying! Even more so, they are outright devastating to our culture and society in the long term.

Seriously, Vista is a lackluster OS! All the usability troubles aside, it can do the job for you, depending on your needs (at work I use it mostly for software development and Internet communication, and it does its job more or less OK), but there’s obviously no WOW-factor at all. But if you just look at the competition (Mac OS, Linux) and the REALLY long development time of Vista, you’ll start to wonder why bother with Vista AT ALL! XP works the same to me (and for many other people it works much better than Vista), so I can’t really find any viable reason to shell out so much money for Vista. And why complicating the issue with so many versions? What’s so special about Vista Ultimate?! Marketing it for some unique Extras, and still not delivering anything serious – to me, looks like Microsoft regards it’s customers as completely retarded… No wonder that smart people generally choose either to stay with XP, or go Mac/Linux way!

And you know there’s something completely wrong with Windows ecosystem at the whole, when you realize that the fastest notebook with Vista is in fact Apple Macbook Pro (according to PC World)!

So, for the average consumer (or for creative professionals and even software developers) Mac is the way to go, for a hacker/power user Linux is the best choice. Maybe for someone even Windows XP is still the best choice, due to habits or some special needs. But who in this world REALLY needs Vista?! I can imagine only a small crowd of hardcore gamers, longing for DirectX 10, but then again, Xbox 360 or Sony PS3 serves gamer’s needs far better, in my opinion. So, it seems almost the only ones who REALLY need Vista are Windows software developers – they need to make sure their software works with it, or use some new technologies like WPF. Or maybe a few more niche cases that doesn’t matter anyway. Yes, I see it this way now! And THE ONLY reason I have Vista on my PC at work is that I’m exactly software developer who needs to test my own software for Vista compatibility (because some of our clients already run Vista – they got it with new PCs). That’s all. I have also Ubuntu Linux “Gutsy Gibbon” installed at work (I use it for our company’s Linux-related project), and I actually enjoy using it! Ubuntu with Compiz Fusion has all the WOW that Vista doesn’t really have. Get the facts, you dirty M$ marketing department!

So, if the system has failed, history teaches us that a revolution will come soon. We’re not as dumb as Microsoft believes. It will result in a huge boost in Mac and Linux adoption. In fact, it looks like it’s already happening right now. Just look at these new Intel MacBooks flying away from the shelves to buyers’ hands in vast amounts, or numerous new mobile devices coming with Linux inside, Google’s Android platform, ASUS Eee PC, etc… I see all the signs of the world changing. I hope these changes are for the better!

Few months have passed since my last post. Finally, the silence is broken! Now I’m going to tell you about some of the most interesting things that I experienced lately. Are you thrilled yet?! Read on…

Having recently installed new Ubuntu Linux 7.10 “Gutsy Gibbon”, I was pleasantly surprised by it. Overall, it’s a very polished OS. Really, you shouldn’t wait any more if you haven’t tried it yet – go install it already, you will not be disappointed! It gives me a feeling that after another release or two Ubuntu will become the Holy Grail of OSes I mean, as close to perfection as you can possibly get! Currently, it seems that only Compiz Fusion (3D desktop with cute graphical effects) is not well polished yet, giving me some graphical glitches sometimes. But overall, Gutsy Gibbon is a pleasure to use, almost like Mac OS X Tiger, or even Leopard! (Haven’t upgraded to Leopard yet – Tiger satisfies me, and I decided to stay with it.. for a little while at least). And keep in mind that such a treasure is absolutely free! I love FOSS For quite a while now desktop Linux was chasing rainbows (struggling to get mainstream attention). You know – whenever you try to get closer to it, it always stays in the distance, unreachable. But hopefully, Linux will finally catch that rainbow soon

I love plenty of choices in the Linux world. One can customize this OS as he likes in a way that’s unmatched in other OSes which limit your choice. You’re a geeky UNIX hacker? No problem, try Fluxbox / XFCE / IceWM / WindowMaker. You’re accustomed to Windows / Mac OS X and want your OS’s desktop environment to be packed with features and to be similar in appearance (and bloat)? Get KDE or Gnome! Want something more original, stylish, beautiful and fast at the same time? Nah, it’s not possible! Or is it?! And here, my friend, we came to another highlight of this post – Enlightenment 17, or E17 in short. You can see a screenshot below (click for full-sized picture).

Enlightenment used to be a window manager, but in this version, which is still beta (mostly stable though), it pretends to be a full desktop shell. Heck, it even has a decent Control Panel! And everything is so elegant and fast at the same time! There’s no point in discussing in great detail here what makes Enlightenment so cool. Because one picture is worth a thousand words. But to fully appreciate it’s style and atmosphere (and speed!), you’ve got to try it yourself. It’s easy to install it in Ubuntu. Google for it It is not in the official Ubuntu repositories yet, because it’s still beta… I think Enlightenment deserves such a name, because after discovering it I truly felt enlightened Definitely worth checking out! And to make it even easier to try, there’s a Live-CD with E17 based on Debian Linux, called Elive. So… I’m awaiting the official release with anticipation!

So, what’s with that cup of Java in the title of this post, you ask? Well, at my day job as a programmer, I write programs in Microsoft’s C# language. Actually, it’s very similar to Sun’s Java, but I haven’t studied Java in detail yet, and never used it (even didn’t want to – I used Delphi before). Recently, I wanted to write some applications and games for myself, as a hobby, in my spare time. Initially, I thought of writing them in C# of course, since I know it better than anything else. But as I work in all 3 popular OSes now, I naturally want my apps to be easily portable, without a hassle. So, that essentially left me with a choice of Java and C#. And, surprising even myself, after thorough analysis of pros and cons, I came to the conclusion to use Java! Because it’s now opensource and fully supported across platforms. C# and .NET are really supported by MS only on Windows. Yes, you can say that there’s Mono for Linux and OSX, but I tried it, and to me, it just doesn’t feel right! But Java does feel quite right! Especially these days, since it became opensource and GPL’d. So, I changed my opinion on Java, and started learning it’s details. I have downloaded Eclipse IDE for Mac OS X and now I’m reading the excellent book by Bruce Eckel “Thinking in Java”. And watching the popularity ratings of programming languages, with Java being the leader there (C# is merely 8th!), I think so many people that choose Java (including myself from now on) just can’t be wrong!

Stay tuned for more posts from me! And I’ll try to post more frequently now. If anyone actually cares, that is

So, my long-standing dream recently came true. I’m now a Mac user! I’ve bought shiny new MacBook Pro 15″ some time ago. And I absolutely like it! I also should say that this is my first notebook ever.

Ladies and gentlemen! (drumroll…) Let me introduce to you my cute MacBook Pro!

Nice solid aluminium case, Apple logo at the back of the lid, gorgeous widescreen display, integrated iSight camera, large trackpad with just one button, white glowing light indicator when it’s sleeping, MagSafe, DVI, FireWire 400 & 800… I like the fact that machine is incredibly quiet. My previous PC has an annoying noise like a jet engine. But this one is quiet, I tell you! Even under heavy load, when all the fans start rolling, it’s more silent than my old PC. Amazing!

It even takes care of my eyes – ambient light sensor in it automatically adjusts brightness of the display, turning keyboard backlight (sic!) on and lowering screen brightness in a dark room! It’s called “attention to details”, and I like it a lot! I quickly got used to the widescreen 16:10 display – now my 4:3 flat-panel 17″ LCD (which I used with my old PC) looks too narrow for me It’s nice to watch movies on a widescreen, because no thick black outlines distract you, since most movies are exactly 16:10. I enjoyed watching Star Wars on my MacBook Pro By the way, it has a resolution 1440×900 pixels.

Apple Remote is pretty cool for watching videos and photos, or listening to music (in conjunction with the built-in Front Row software), from the comfort of your sofa. Both the Remote and Front Row are very easy to use, almost like an iPod! Also, Remote can be used to control iTunes and other applications easily (its functionality can be expanded by 3-rd party software).

Keyboard is a pleasure to use. As a previous Windows and Linux power user, I had no problem to get used to a slightly different keyboard layout. Mac OS X has a set of its own keyboard shortcuts, many of them involving a key “Apple” (or “Command”), such as Command-Q to quit an application. All of them are intuitive and easy to learn. And these shortcuts are usually consistent across the system and applications.

Trackpad is quite large, but has only one button. Well, honestly, for me it wasn’t a problem. Simply because Mac OS X relatively rarely needs a right-click, and I quickly mastered to use Ctrl+Click when it’s absolutely needed. I love the trackpad for smooth two-finger scrolling in both horizontal and vertical directions! It’s so convenient! I even threw my mouse out of the window since I now don’t need it at all! Well, I’m joking here about throwing it, but I don’t use an external mouse with my MacBook Pro since it’s not really needed. Seriously. For me, at least. Maybe a graphics designer or a gamer will need it, though.

Since it uses an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, it’s quite fast. And it can also run Windows natively. I installed Windows on it (using BootCamp software from Apple), played Quake4 for a while, and then wiped it out from my hard drive. Why? Simply because I don’t need it. At all. All applications that I need to use at home exist for Mac OS X (and by the way, for Linux too).

Many people complained about their MacBook running insanely hot. I didn’t notice that problem with mine. Warm, yes. But not hot. Well, maybe I should say I don’t place it on a lap, since it is NOT a laptop, despite what some people think.

Well, I don’t know what else to say. I simply love my MacBook Pro. It’s an incredibly powerful machine, and it’s a pleasure to use. What more can I say? I’m glad my dream finally came true

In my earlier post I wrote about Apple being the true innovator in the IT world now. And said that, while I admire Linux, it seems to get stuck in perpetually inferior state. Well, I want to clarify my current view of Apple and the FOSS (free and opensource software) world.

In fact, I was a little exaggerating and dramatizing – of course, the opensource movement has undoubtedly got very high speed of development, and quality keeps getting better. Yes, for now in some areas, Linux is still inferior. But I’m sure it’s temporarily, and probably in the near future this situation will change greatly to the better. Ubuntu is much better at the desktop as were almost any of its predecessors. It raised the level of quality in FOSS community. Now actually some average users can use Linux (but it depends on their needs). It showed that quality and usability of free software can improve greatly over time. So, while for now Mac OS X is (arguably) better than competition at the desktop computing, it doesn’t mean that Linux can’t catch up and lead the way! In fact, I’m looking forward to exactly this. Linux has a strong technological basement, it just needs to streamline its interface and improve usability and accessibility, in my mind! And it will surely deliver that, but it needs some time to achieve that. And during that time, it needs some additional support and protection from the newly arising dangers (like proliferation of proprietary “standards”, and software patents issues). Recently released GPLv3 license provides protection against Microsoft and other evils (hopefully). But actually some other entity also helps to ensure thriving of Linux in the future. You’ll be surprised, but this helpful entity is… Apple, Inc.!

As I’ve seen in many blogs and other dark corners of the World Wide Web, some FOSS people tend to think of Apple as the evil proprietary company, like Micro$oft (or even more evil!). In my view of the world, this isn’t true. In fact, Apple is actually helping FOSS community in a war against proprietary Microsoft. Here’s why.

Apple is quite successfully fighting with Microsoft in some areas – Multimedia for example, with iPod and their iTunes store – first with a least restrictive DRM possible (temporarily – a wise move, actually, to convince RIAA), and later, when they hold the majority of the market – so they can set the rules – and they do now – they now offer tracks without DRM in their store! It seemed impossible just a few years ago!!!

Most importantly, their software is based mostly on open standards, and they successfully fight Microsoft’s proprietary vendor lock-in “standards” (Apple’s standardized MPEG4 AAC vs Microsoft’s WMA and PlaysForSure aggressive DRM; OpenGL vs Direct3D, etc). In the next version of Mac OS X (Leopard) Apple will adopt another open standard – CalDAV, to fight the proprietary Microsoft’s Exchange Server + Outlook calendaring and messaging protocols. Even their much hyped iPhone promotes the use of the free Web, based only on free and open standards like AJAX, completely ignoring proprietary technologies like Adobe’s Flash, Microsoft’s SilverLight and even Sun’s Java. Enough food for thought, huh?

Thus, they are essentially helping the entire FOSS world! They are establishing the solid foundation of open standards across the IT industry, on which Linux and FOSS will thrive! I see it that way, and to me Apple looks like the ally to the FOSS community, NOT an enemy like some aggressive opensourcers tend to think!

I’ve just bought an Apple’s Mac computer to support their push for open standards and interoperability, really! I don’t believe that they are a proprietary evil company like Microsoft. Their actions mostly prove my thinking. Just think about that!

Microsoft is essentially surrounded right now – by Google (taking away the web), Apple (with their computer market share growth outpacing PC market growth, and iPod/iTunes/Apple TV media dominance) and FOSS, mostly represented by Linux and OpenOffice, aimed to kill Microsoft’s precious cash cows (Windows & Office), their last hope, because their attempts in other markets usually failed miserably (WMA, Zune, Xbox – all were a commercial disaster)!

What Microsoft is going to do now? It gotta think about the situation, and think hard. They should change their strategy soon, because otherwise their huge empire will soon fall. We all know what happened to Titanic, or Roman Empire… Obviously, FOSS and Apple are now in a winning position.

Long live the FOSS revolution and open standards! Peace, brothers and sisters!

Well, I have a really hard time deciding what to buy: iMac or MacBook (PRO?). Or should I wait for Leopard release this autumn? Please help me decide, don’t hesitate to comment below

My needs are:

programming

listening to music

watching movies occasionally (DVDs, DivX, maybe HD video in the future?)

a bit of digital photography

maybe a little bit of gaming (casual): games like Battle for Wesnoth are enough for me (i don’t need much 3D power)

a bit of office work (free OpenOffice/NeoOffice will do)

I have a high-quality 17″ LCD panel. Ideally, I would just connect a Core Duo Mac Mini to it, but I’m afraid that it is too underpowered for me (I want more RAM and Core 2 Duo, because of HD video and use of virtualization software, for example).

I don’t want to dump my current display if I buy iMac. And if I connect it as a second monitor to iMac, they just don’t look good together (completely different designs).

And MacBooks… I like them, but I don’t know how it feels to use a notebook – I’ve never had one. Screen is probably too small for me. And there’s no Apple Store in my town to actually try it out

MacBook Pro is absolutely awesome, I love it. But it seems too expensive. Is it worth the price?

Please help! Maybe WWDC will bring something new to the plate…

Update: I’ve already bought a MacBook Pro 15″ – and I am very satisfied

Linux is an excellent free operating system. But is it suitable for the desktop of an average computer user? I doubt it. Yes, I personally have Ubuntu Linux installed on my desktop PC, but again, I’m NOT the average user, I’m software developer and a power user. And even I find some little things here and there very annoying from the usability standpoint.

It seems to me, that Linux is bound to stay in a perpetual “almost ready for the masses” state. I think I’m being realistic here. Really, for many years the Linux community has been saying: “This year will be the year of Linux on the desktop”. And you know what? This still doesn’t happen, and, to be honest, I don’t believe that mass migration to Linux will occur anytime soon. It seems that it always misses something seemingly tiny, but nevertheless important to an average user. In large part, IMHO, it tries to imitate Mac OS X and Windows (it is seen quite often). For now it has almost came up to current version of Mac OS X (“Tiger”) in terms of features, but soon “Leopard” will be released, and I’m sure it will pack a whole lot of new nice features (Steve Jobs will talk about them today at WWDC, I’m sure there will be surprises). Linux is and will be lagging behind in the nearest future, when it comes to desktop computing.

To me, Apple is now THE innovator in the IT world. Even Microsoft didn’t hesitate to copy its features to Vista (and, to be honest, this copies are worse than the original – for example, compare Mac’s very usable Expose vs nice looking but totally useless Flip3D in Vista – it’s been discussed in blogs a thousand times already). This is nicely demonstrated (in a funny way, using irony) in the video below (from YouTube):

Don’t get me wrong. I admire Linux. But still, even Ubuntu is not as polished and feature-complete as hyped to be. I want my desktop computing experience to be hassle-free. I want my computer to “just work”. So, no offense to Linux community, but Mac OS X seems to be superior desktop OS. Read Apple HIG (human-interface guidelines) – they really care about user interfaces and usability of software! And most devices work without problems. I have a printer that’s supported by Windows and Mac OS X, but there’s no driver for Linux. Yes, you can say that it’s not Linux’s fault, it’s the manufacturer than hasn’t released the driver for Linux. But should the user care? C’est la vie…

I mean, I currently have (K)Ubuntu Linux 6.06 LTS installed, and I like it. But my next computer will be a Mac, and I think I’ll stick with Mac OS X in the nearest future, because of its elegance, polish and superior usability… Anyway, it’s my personal choice, and I think that today both Linux and Mac OS X are more usable than Windows. To me, Windows Vista contains almost nothing significantly new. But that’s another story…

So… Now I’m eagerly awaiting what Steve Jobs will say about “Leopard” and new iMac models at the WWDC today!

PS: Well, I can’t see too far in the future. Who knows, maybe even sooner than I think, Linux will hit the mainstream. It’s quite possible actually, given the very fast pace of development in the OSS camp, and the constant rise in its quality. Maybe very soon we’ll face the time when Linux will be the main source of new ideas for the IT world. I’ll be glad if this happens!

When I got my first Personal Computer long time ago (in the 20th century), it was running MS DOS. I remember being fascinated by the “realistic” computer games of that time, especially Doom and Dark Forces 3D action games. Oh, sweet times indeed…

Then Windows 95 came. At first, it felt somewhat uncomfortable, because I was already used to MS DOS, which was fine to me, and didn’t want to learn something completely different. But time passed by, and I started to use Windows 9x exclusively, and in fact I didn’t even know that an alternative (Linux) exists! But Windows just got worse with every new version, and it reached an apogee with the release of Windows ME (“Mistake Edition”:) ). Yeah, I really hated that OS. It was VERY VERY buggy! But everyone around me used Windows, so I just thought that issues with Windows are inherent to computers in general, not to this particular OS. So I thought…

When I started to use Windows XP, it turned out to be more stable than Win 9x family. But still I was having issues quite often with Explorer quirks and famous Blue Screens Of Death. Only with the release of Service Pack 2, Windows XP became a stable system. But still it had issues with security, and generally one with an Internet connection should use at least a decent firewall and antivirus scanner, constantly running in the background and using computer’s valuable resources, otherwise Windows PC can be easily infected with some virus or a spyware!

Naturally, I became tired of all of this. And when I first heard about Linux (it was Redhat Linux 9.0 back then), I decided to try it out. It positively surprised me! It showed to me that a viable (and FREE) alternative to Windows exists! It was quite easy to install and use. But unfortunately, it missed some features I needed, and was not mature enough, in my eyes. So, I decided to switch back to Windows XP, but keep an eye on Linux development…

At that time, as I remember, Firefox web browser first came to the scene (it was 2004), and I started to use it in Windows XP. It has radically changed my web browsing experience and habits! Tabbed browsing is definitely a very good idea.

Later in 2004, I got (from my friends) CDs with Mandrake Linux 9. I immediately fell in love with it!!! It was MUCH better then Redhat9, to my mind! It was so user-friendly, easy to use and stable, that I was converted! I started exploring the Linux world and learned a lot of new things. Especially I liked the fact that there are plenty of different compilers, IDEs and other tools for the programmers in Linux. Since I am a programmer myself, I felt like a child in a candy store At that time I had only programmed in Turbo Pascal for DOS and Borland Delphi for Windows. But today I am familiar with more than 10 different programming languages (C, C++, Perl, Python, PHP, Bash shell scripting, etc), thanks to Linux So, Linux makes an excellent platform for a software developer… And Vim is the best IDE, of course

After some versions with Mandrake (before it became “Mandriva”), I switched to Gentoo Linux, to learn more about Linux internals. It was the first time I compiled a Linux kernel from the source code myself! Well, it was pretty simple and straight-forward to me. And I was impressed with the sheer power of the Portage software management system in Gentoo Linux!

But later, since I was learning Computer Science in the university, I didn’t have enough free time to wait for programs to compile in Gentoo, and to maintain the system in the up-to-date state. Life is too short, and I realized that I’d better spend it on something more creative and valuable, than wasting it on constant compiling and other time-consuming activities…

So, now I’ve found the Linux distribution (“distro”) that is very simple to use “out of the box”, and has a decent package management software, which is quite fast, stable and reliable, and doesn’t require compiling from source. What is that distro, you ask? Ubuntu, of course! Try it – it’s free, and most likely you’ll love it!

PS: Some people complain that there aren’t many games for the Linux platform. While this is mostly true, I don’t care much, because I don’t play computer games these days. Some time earlier (before I started using Linux) I was addicted to them, I could play Serious Sam for many hours straight, for example. But Linux (due to the fact there aren’t many games for it, and I spent time quite nice learning the internals of Linux anyway) saved me from that addiction . How do I relax, you ask? Well, I like to listen to my favorite music, watch movies and chat with friends, for example!

To learn more about myself, read the “About” page of my blog!

Sincerely yours, Michael.
